Is it defamation if I wrote an opinion piece about a public figure which analysed his life?

I wrote an opinion piece about a public figure. It wasn't nice about him, but it was more an analysis of his life and his decisions. He says it was defamation and has threatened to sue me. I don't actually think it would make anyone think less of him though. Is this defamation?
