Can a family sue for defaming a deceased relative if the relative actually wrote it before he died?

I work for a country paper and recently we recently published an obituary for an upstanding member of the community. He had actually written it some years before his death. The obituary talked about some difficult choices he had made during his time in Vietnam. His family are trying to sue us now for defaming him. Can they do that?
