Civil fines and infringements

Civil fines and infringements

A civil fine or infringement notice is an 'on the spot' fine which is issued for minor offence such as fare evasion on public transport, littering, or motor vehicle offences such as speeding or parking illegally. The penalty that must be paid under an infringement notice will vary from offence to offence. The infringement system can be flexible, and gives a person who has been issued with an infringement the option to pay the infringement up front. Payment plans can also be arranged for people who have limited income. However, ignoring fines and infringements can have serious consequences, and legal advice should be sought if you have done so. Failure to pay an infringement may result in a person being required to attend Court.
