IP infringement

A few years ago my start up business engaged the services of an external consultant to help develop our IT systems. We agreed that any products developed would be owned by the business not the contributing individual, but nothing was put in writing. One of the consultants is now claiming they are owed money because they own the IP used by the business. Do they have any right to the IP?
