LawShorts: Nest Legal’s Laura Vickers

Meet Laura Vickers, the founder of Nest Legal, a Victoria-based legal practice created solely to help families navigate the law.

Nest Legal focuses on wills and end-of-life planning, home ownership, and dispute advice.

These services are offered for a fixed price so families have peace of mind when it comes to legal costs. Laura makes a point of being flexible and is available to speak to clients when it suits them. She regularly has video conferences with clients over Skype in the evenings, once the kiddies have been put to bed. Unfamiliar with Skype? Chat with Laura via LawAdvisor’s own secure video call system.

“I feel I help people most when I act for clients who would otherwise not be able to access great legal advice,” Laura says.

“At the end of our evening Skype conference once they have finalised their estate planning arrangements for their families after meaning to do so for years makes my job worthwhile. That stuff is so important.

“It’s immensely rewarding: people don’t often realise that a good relationship with a lawyer (who can bounce ideas off you before you make big life decisions) helps you avoid so many problems in the long-term.”

As a teenager, like many young university students, Laura wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted to do with her life. Her intention had been to become a journalist. Law was just an afterthought, “I thought it would make me a better journalist”, she says.

Soon enough she discovered that law was her passion and never looked back. After a few years working at top commercial and government firms, she founded Nest Legal in an effort to provide a legal service that catered to the needs families. A decision inspired by the experiences of her grandmother.

“She fled Nazi Germany for London and put herself through law school, started her own law firm from her front room,  juggling toddlers and conveyances as I do today,” Laura says.
